MD graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Carolina State University with a BS in Zoology and Premed prior to attending medical school at Duke University. He obtained his postdoctoral training and residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center before completing a Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He has received numerous professional awards, including the James Baril Research Award and Katherine Wolcott Walker Research Award. In 2006, Dr. Spencer was inducted into the American Shoulder and Elbow Society.

Dr. Spencer has been cited over 40 times in original research, 52 times in peer reviewed publications, and has written chapters for 6 different books on orthopedic surgery. He has worked closely on 8 different product designs that are used in surgery today and holds 2 US patents.

After being awarded two past Neer Awards in his field, in 2024 Dr. Spencer was inducted into Neer Circle in the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

More importantly, he is a husband to a wonderful woman, Tracey, and has two children. He’s active within his church and has been a staple in his Knoxville community and will now also become a staple within the North Texas community.
