Sending your child to college is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring new worries. What happens if they get sick hundreds of miles from home? Who can they call when they have a health question? And how can you feel confident they know where to turn when you can’t be there?

Planning for your child’s healthcare before move-in day can help. Family concierge medicine gives families a way to keep college-age children connected to a trusted physician, even when they’re living away from home.

Why College-Age Healthcare Matters

College is often the first time a young adult manages healthcare more independently. They may need to decide where to go when they’re sick, determine whether they need medical attention or communicate with a healthcare provider without a parent nearby.

This transition to managing healthcare more independently can also bring new health needs, including preventive care, mental health concerns and management of ongoing conditions.

Those decisions can be harder when a student is living far from home.

College-age students may need care or guidance for:

  • Illnesses or minor injuries
  • Preventive care
  • Medication questions
  • Ongoing health concerns
  • Mental health concerns
  • Referrals or specialist care
  • Questions about whether they need in-person care

Having an established physician gives your child a familiar place to turn when these questions arise. Instead of starting over with an unfamiliar provider, they can contact an EMTX provider who can help determine the appropriate next step and provide ongoing primary care.

How Family Concierge Medicine Gives Parents Peace of Mind

When your child lives away from home, even a minor health concern can leave you wondering what is happening. You may not be able to drive them to the doctor or help them decide what to do next.

That’s where direct access to an EMTX provider can make a difference.

EMTX’s concierge programs provide 24/7 access to an EMTX provider. Patients can call, text, email or message a physician directly through the patient portal. Concierge members also receive priority scheduling, with same-day or next-day visits available in person or remotely.

For a college student, that means having a familiar healthcare resource to contact when a health question comes up. For parents, it can provide reassurance that their child has an established place to turn when they need medical guidance.

If your student needs care outside EMTX while away from home, our team can help coordinate specialty or other medical care and keep it connected with their ongoing healthcare.

This helps connect the care they receive away from home with their ongoing healthcare.

The concierge program does not cover the cost of visits or services provided outside EMTX.

Enrolling Before College Starts

The weeks before college can become busy quickly. Between housing, classes, travel and everything else on a college checklist, healthcare can be easy to overlook until something goes wrong.

Seeing a provider before the semester begins gives your child an established healthcare resource from the start. It can also help them become more comfortable taking an active role in their own healthcare.

If your child is heading to college, the weeks before the semester begins are a good time to explore your options.

It’s also important to understand the difference between health insurance and concierge primary care.

Concierge medicine does not replace health insurance. EMTX does not bill health insurance for membership services, and patients pay directly for concierge services. Health insurance can still be important for healthcare needs outside the concierge program, such as hospital stays, specialist visits or services outside the concierge program.

Planning ahead can give both you and your child greater confidence as they begin this next stage of life.
